Many people find that dietary supplements can be beneficial. The supplements provide needed nutrients, make bones stronger and help in other ways.
But some supplements have more value than others, a good reason for you to do some research and check with a physician, dietitian or pharmacist before making a purchase.
For example, the American Gastroenterological Association does not support most probiotics, saying “there is not enough evidence to support the use of probiotics.”
Regulation
The federal government does not examine or regulate dietary supplements as rigorously as it treats drugs.
The Food and Drug Administration FDA does not have the authority to approve dietary supplements before they are marketed.
But it is responsible for enforcing the laws and regulations governing dietary supplements; the Federal Trade Commission monitors advertising.
Be cautious
The FDA advises consumers to talk to their doctor, pharmacist, or other health care professional before buying or using a dietary supplement.
Some supplements might interact with medicines or other supplements. Their ingredients can have strong effects in the body, interfere with lab tests, or have dangerous effects during surgery.
